How to Keep Cool in the UK Summer Heatwave

Top tips on how to beat this heat

If you're currently in the UK, you will know about the spell of hot weather we are experiencing. Whilst sunshine is always welcome here, our homes are typically built to trap heat in, rather than keep it out. Prolonged heat can ruin our sleep, concentration and overall mood. So, here are some extremely helpful tips on how to stay cool at home and in the workplace.

 

  •  Prioritise your Hydration 

Drinking plenty of fluids in this heat seems obvious, but it's easy to forget to stay hydrated. Keep a water bottle with you at all times. You can also boost your hydration through the foods you eat. Some great choices include watermelon, strawberries, cucumber, tomatoes and oranges. 

 

  • Keep your Bedroom Cool 

Close the curtains and blinds during the day in your bedroom to block out direct sunlight. This makes a huge difference! You can also open windows in the evening when it starts getting a bit cooler, but keep the lights off to avoid bugs flying in. Lightweight cotton bedding is the best option for your bedroom, as it's cool and breathable.

 

  • Make use of the Freezer 

These tips might not be conventional, but I have found them very effective. Putting your water bottle in the freezer overnight is great, your water stays icy cold for the following day which is perfect for an instant cool down. I've also heard that putting a hot water bottle in the freezer makes a great DIY ice pack. You can also wet a cloth and put it in the freezer, then lay it on your neck, chest, or forehead if you are feeling particularly warm at night. This works wonders. 

 

  • Go Outside at the Right Time 

Try to avoid going outside or having your windows and doors open around 11am - 3pm. These are when the temperatures are highest. If you're going outside to grab lunch or get some exercise, where loose-fitting, light coloured clothing to avoid overheating. Don't forget your water!

 

  • Listen to Your Body

If you start feeling tired, dizzy, or thirsty, this could mean you are struggling with the heat. Make sure if you are working you take regular short breaks and try and move somewhere as cool as possible to stay focused, and most importantly, healthy. 

 

Hopefully these tips are helpful for those of you braving the warm weather at the minute. Personally, I have applied all of these tips to my everyday, which has made the sunshine so much more enjoyable and I am FINALLY sleeping through the night.
