Mental health affects individuals within all professional fields. However, while employees in traditional full-time roles often have access to employer-sponsored mental health resources, contract workers still remain frequently overlooked. We want to shed light on why it is crucial to these extend mental health services to contract workers as well as full-time employees.
To Encourage Workers to prioritise self-care
Due to the lack of a traditional employment structure, contract workers often have more control over their work-life balance. By providing easy access to mental health resources, organizations can encourage contract workers to prioritize self-care, set healthy work boundaries, and maintain a healthier work-life balance. This, in turn, can lead to increased job satisfaction and better long-term relationships with contractors.
Promoting Productivity and Performance
Investing in mental health resources for contract workers not only benefits the individuals themselves but has also been shown to enhance overall productivity and performance. Research by the World Health Organisation has shown that “without effective support, mental disorders and other mental health conditions can affect a person’s confidence and identity at work, capacity to work productively, absences and the ease with which to retain or gain work”.1 By providing ample mental well-being resources to contract workers, organizations can ensure they have a healthier, happier and more motivated workforce.
Reducing Stigma and Promoting Inclusivity
Extending mental health resources to contract workers also helps to combat existing stigma surrounding mental health. By demonstrating a commitment to the well-being of all of their workers, regardless of their employment status, organizations can foster a culture of inclusivity and compassion. This proactive approach not only removes barriers for those seeking support but also promotes open dialogue and destigmatizes mental health concerns, creating a healthier and more supportive work environment for all.
Here at pirkx we believe that all workers deserve access to accessible mental health support. Contract workers are an integral part of today's labour force, and their mental health should not be overlooked. By extending mental health resources to these workers, organisations can promote their well-being, enhance productivity, and foster a more inclusive and compassionate work environment.
